Canelo vs Saunders: Boxing pros react to Canelo Alvarez’s TKO win and Billy Joe Saunders “quitting” in the corner

Canelo Alvarez is getting big praise from the pros, but Billy Joe Saunders may be getting even bigger criticism.

Canelo Alvarez now has three of four title belts at super middleweight, following his stoppage of Billy Joe Saunders after an eye injury after eight rounds at AT&T Stadium.

Mike Coppinger reports that Saunders is being examined for a “suspected broken right orbital bone.”

A stoppage in the corner — and it’s been noted Saunders’ team pulled the plug there, it wasn’t stopped by the referee on advice from the doctor but because Saunders’ corner halted it — is always going to bring out some harsh judgment in boxing, and not just from loud fans or media people, either.

A lot of pros are being loudly critical of Saunders (30-1, 14 KO) “quitting” in the corner on the injury, some of them pretty harsh about it. But there’s also just a lot of praise out there for Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KO), who now has the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles at 168 lbs.
