Canelo Alvarez has kept one goal in mind for his next fight, most desiring an undisputed 168 lb championship clash against Caleb Plant. And despite the expected rockiness of getting a deal done between a non-PBC fighter and a PBC fighter, Mike Coppinger reports the two are “closing in” on a deal.

The fight would take place Sept. 18 on FOX pay-per-view, meaning Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO) would sign a one-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions which Coppinger says will “likely” be a career-high guarantee for the Mexican superstar.

Plant (21-0, 12 KO) brings the IBF to the table, the only piece of the championship Canelo — who has the WBC, WBA, and WBO belts — does not own.

This would also be Canelo’s first fight off of DAZN since Sept. 2018, when he beat Gennadiy Golovkin in their HBO pay-per-view rematch. When HBO got out of the boxing business shortly after, Canelo signed a record deal with DAZN, which didn’t really come close to its original plan, which was for 11 fights. Alvarez got that deal ended last year, but still fought his last three bouts on DAZN, anyway, working with Matchroom Boxing for wins over Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, and Billy Joe Saunders.
