WBO light flyweight champion Elwin Soto and mandatory challenger Jonathan Gonzalez successfully avoided a purse bid yesterday, and now ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez reports that the pair could meet stateside on September 18th.

WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez could also appear on the still-developing show against a “Filipino challenger.” WBC #7 Jayr Raquinel, #8 Giemel Magramo, #9 Jonathan Taconing, and #10 Genisis Libranza all fit that description.

“Bomba” Gonzalez (24-3-1, 14 KO) figures to be more than just a speedbump for Soto (19-1, 13 KO) on “La Pulga’s” path towards a unification match with Hiroto Kyoguchi. The 30-year-old Puerto Rican, whom you may recall from that time in 2013 when his handlers inexplicably decided to feed him to Giovani Segura, gave Kosei Tanaka everything he could handle before falling in the seventh round and is 2-0 since dropping from 112 to 108. He and the entertainingly vulnerable champion figure to produce some quality violence.

Any card that features both Soto and Martinez figures to be an absolute banger, so let’s hope this one gets over the finish line.
