Vergil Ortiz picks winners for Pacquiao-Spence, Fury-Wilder 3

The young rising star gives his breakdown on some of boxing’s biggest upcoming fights.

Wil Esco is an assistant editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2014.

In this conversation with Fight Hub TV, rising welterweight Vergil Ortiz talks about some of boxing’s most anticipated fights on the schedule, including a welterweight showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Errol Spence to go along with the pending third fight between heavyweights Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. And with recent news breaking that Canelo Alvarez won’t be unifying titles with Caleb Plant, Ortiz says he might be even more excited to see Alvarez take on Dmitry Bivol.

Ortiz on Pacquiao-Spence

“I think Spence is gonna win, that’s just my opinion. I don’t think Pacquiao can’t win, I think Spence is just bigger, I feel like he’s stronger. I feel like when he fought Thurman he was doing really good but he kinda slowed down towards the end, just a little bit. I mean, what, he’s forty-something, there’s no shame in that. I just feel like Spence is a little too much.”

On Fury-Wilder 3

“I think Wilder’s gonna get him on this one. That’s just how I feel. I think Wilder’s gonna get him, I’ve seen the videos, he’s looking a little more technically better. He already has power behind him, there’s really no need of fixing on the power part. I feel like he’s gonna come in smarter.”

On Canelo-Plant collapsing and Canelo’s possible replacement opponents

“It’s a shame that the fight fell through. You never know, there’s so many things that go into negotiations. It’s not black and white. So I really don’t know what to say about that...seeing Canelo (possibly) fighting Bivol is like ‘damn’, it kind of makes you feel excited for the fight. If it happens that’s gonna be a great fight and I got Canelo against anyone.”
