Orlando Salido suffered a broken orbital bone in his fight against Mikey Garcia on January 19, but still plans to return in May and target another title after that.

Orlando Salido suffered a broken orbital bone in his loss to Mikey Garcia last Saturday night in New York, probably no surprise to anyone who saw the fight or has seen post-fight photos, as above.

From ESPN.com and manager Sean Gibbons:

"It's very possible that it was broken right off the bat in the first round. ... Salido wasn't ready for that first shot so it took him a while to get adjusted after that and we think he was fighting with the broken bone from the first round. He had a CT scan at the hospital and everything was OK, thankfully, other than that (broken bone). We were at the hospital until 5 in the morning and then Orlando was on a flight back to Mexico at 9 a.m."

Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO) suffered four knockdowns in the fight before it was cut short on a headbutt that reportedly broke Garcia's nose in the eighth round. The veteran dropped his WBO featherweight title in the fight, and is planning a return in May in Mexico, before targeting another title fight later in the year.

WBO super featherweight titlist Rocky Martinez is one possible opponent, with the winner of the March 1 fight between Billy Dib and Luis Franco for Dib's IBF featherweight title another potential option.

Orlando Salido came up short against Mikey Garcia this past Saturday night, and now the former featherweight champ is planning a move to 130 pounds and an eventual shot at Rocky Martinez and the WBO title.

Saturday night wasn't Orlando Salido's finest hour, but the veteran Mexican battler is making plans to move up to 130 pounds, and fight WBO titlist Rocky Martinez in September.

From BoxingScene.com:

"I talked to [manager] Sean Gibbons and my promoter Fernando Beltran after the fight. They told me that I have their support and if I wanted a rematch [with Garcia] they would negotiate it - but I told them that I'd rather go up to 130 pounds and challenge the Puerto Rican Roman 'Rocky 'Martinez, who fought in the same card on Saturday."

Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO) says he hopes to fight in Mexico in May in a 10-round tune-up bout, perhaps testing the waters at 130, before going after Martinez (26-1-2, 16 KO) in September. Martinez escaped with a debated draw against Juan Carlos Burgos on Saturday, keeping the super featherweight title he won last September.

Salido-Martinez sounds like a fun fight, really -- both are good, durable pressure fighters, rugged guys who unleash reckless shots but aren't totally lacking skill. Plus, it's a fight that might make a lot of sense in Puerto Rico, where Salido has a big reputation with two wins over Juan Manuel Lopez on the island.

Orlando Salido lost by technical decision last night to Mikey Garcia, and though the fight wasn't close, Salido believes that Team Garcia quit due just as Salido was making a rally.

Orlando Salido wasn't pleased with the result of last night's HBO Boxing After Dark main event, but it wasn't just the loss to Mikey Garcia, or even that he was knocked down four times and mostly dominated. Salido believes that Garcia and his corner quit.

The fight was halted after eight rounds, when the ringside doctor stopped the bout after Garcia (31-0, 26 KO) suffered a broken nose following a headbutt from Salido:

"I never felt that the head-butt was strong enough to do that much damage," Salido said. "I felt I was getting to him and I felt when I saw his corner, they were ready to quit. They were ready to stop the fight. … In the seventh round, I felt like I was getting to him. I had five rounds to get this guy and I felt that I was on my way."

Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO) was definitely doing better than he had early in the fight, but it would have been hard to do much worse than he did in the early stages At the time the fight went to the cards, Salido was down massively, and lost on scores of 79-69, 79-69, and 79-70. BLH had it 79-69 for Garcia, too.

I, too, thought the decision to stop the fight when it happened was due at least in part to trainer Robert Garcia pushing for the fight to stop there. There was absolutely no doubt that Mikey was a mile ahead in points, and it was a guaranteed win to end the fight there, with no possible danger of Salido making any comeback. But there's also no doubt that Garcia dominated Salido over that fight, and if there is going to be a rematch, I can't help but feel like Salido should get a decent win first, as respectable and tough a fighter as he is.

Mikey Garcia put in a phenomenal performance tonight, but may not have gotten the sort of ending he would have liked, beating Orlando Salido by technical decision over eight rounds.

Mikey Garcia had a coming-out party on the big stage tonight on HBO Boxing After Dark, but the end result was still a little bit unsatisfying.

Garcia won the WBO featherweight title from Orlando Salido, scoring four knockdowns along the way, but took the belt in a fight cut short on an accidental headbutt that broke Garcia's nose, winning on scores of 79-69, 79-69, and 79-70 after eight rounds of action. BLH had it 79-69 for Garcia, who floored Salido twice in the first round, and again in the third and fourth rounds.

Before the mild criticism, let me say this: Mikey Garcia was excellent tonight, and dissected a very good fighter, a hard-nosed veteran who hadn't been beaten this handily since Juan Manuel Marquez picked Salido apart in 2004, and even that wasn't as totally one-sided as this was.

But it seemed to me, and this is just a personal take on the situation, that Garcia's corner, specifically his trainer and older brother Robert, worked the situation to their advantage a bit. Yes, Garcia's nose was broken on an accidental headbutt (there's some question as to whether it was an accident at all), but they seemed to make the call to push it to the scorecards very quickly. In a way, it seemed like taking the guaranteed win rather than testing the waters with the valiant and still-charging Salido any further.

After the fight, Garcia (31-0, 26 KO) said he would give Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO) a rematch, but there's probably no demand for that. This wasn't competitive at all, really.

No matter how you slice it, we did see Garcia's great talent on display tonight. The 25-year-old prospect graduated to top fighter status with this win, handling Salido with ease for the vast majority of the bout. It was an extremely impressive performance from the young fighter, who now will get plenty of due credit as possibly the best featherweight in the world. He outclassed Salido, and that's no easy task.

Gennady Golovkin and Gabriel Rosado threw down in New York City tonight, with Golovkin winning on a corner stoppage over seven brutal rounds on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Gabriel Rosado came to fight, and as a result, his blood stained the ring and everything else in New York City, as Gennady Golovkin dominated en route to a seventh round stoppage, remaining unbeaten and retaining his WBA middleweight title.

Golovkin (25-0, 22 KO) opened up Rosado (21-6, 13 KO) in the second round, a nasty cut near the left eye that only got worse as the fight went on, as the Kazakh bruiser targeted it nicely. Rosado also wound up bleeding from the nose and possibly his lip, as he was hammered by right hands and powerful jabs from Golovkin, whose power was the obvious difference in the fight.

Rosado did have moments, landing some good right hands here and there, and he gave Golovkin some lumps on the face, as well. But Rosado won one round of the fight if any, and he was just outclassed in an admirable attempt to score a huge upset.

The fight could have been stopped during or after the sixth, but as the seventh round went on and Golovkin continued to brutalize his foe, Rosado's trainer Billy Briscoe put a stop to the fight, telling Rosado's father, "I've got to stop this fight. Your son's gonna die." It was a moment of extreme emotion, and Briscoe made the right call to halt the bout. Both fighter and trainer deserve respect for their performances, as does Golovkin, of course.

Rocky Martinez managed to leave New York with his WBO super featherweight title, another in an increasingly disturbing trend of very unpopular decisions in boxing.

Another week, another case of bad scoring by boxing's judges. This time, Rocky Martinez escaped New York with his WBO super featherweight title, going to a controversial draw against Juan Carlos Burgos in the HBO Boxing After Dark opener. Scores were 117-111 Burgos, 116-112 Martinez, and 114-114. BLH had it 117-111 for Burgos.

Burgos (30-1-1, 20 KO) seemed to dictate most of the fight from the outside, and also met Martinez (26-1-2, 16 KO) at least 50-50 in close quarters. Most scores from media and fans on Twitter and our site were in the 117-111, 116-112 realm for Martinez, and I'm not sure that anyone outside of judge Tony Paolillo had Martinez actually winning the fight. (Note: Max Kellerman kept saying that Paolillo scored Casamayor-Santa Cruz in 2008 for Casamayor. This is incorrect; Paolillo scored it 114-113 for Santa Cruz.)

John Signorile was the judge who had it 114-114, which was almost as bad, but pales in comparison. The judge who got it right was Waleska Roldan.

It's hard to keep getting upset about this stuff every week. Yes, it needs to change, but it's not going to. Tonight's judges were inexperienced, but we see "respected veteran" judges screw up all the time, too. There is no accountability, there are no consequences, and nothing is changing.

As for the fight, it was pretty decent. Martinez gave a valid and valiant effort in there, never giving up, plugging away the entire fight, but Burgos did some great body work, which if nothing else, I think, should have been the difference in the outcome of the fight. But it wasn't.

Orlando Salido faces Mikey Garcia in tonight's highly-anticipated HBO main event. Bad Left Hook has live round-by-round coverage and immediate results for the entire card.

Tonight at 9:45 pm EST on HBO, a big tripleheader from The Theater at Madison Square Garden goes live, with three world titles on the line for 2013's first major boxing card.

In the main event, WBO featherweight titlist Orlando "Siri" Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO) takes on rising star Mikey Garcia (30-0, 26 KO) in a pick'em fight that has our staff split. Veteran Salido took the "0" from Juan Manuel Lopez in 2011, and beat the Puerto Rican slugger again last year in a pair of Fight of the Year candidates. Garcia, trained by his older brother Robert, is taking his first shot at a major title, and is the slight betting favorite.

WBA middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO) is also back in action, facing tough junior middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO). It's Golovkin's second HBO outing, and he figures to have a much bigger audience this time, even though he's not in the main event as he was in September against Grzegorz Proksa. For Rosado, this is a massive opportunity, though he's a big underdog.

In the televised opener, WBO super featherweight beltholder Rocky Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KO) will face Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KO) in a fight that could steal the show, renewing the Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry.

BLH will have live coverage tonight, so join us at 9:45!

Ryan Bivins and Scott Christ discuss the big, non-Salido vs Garcia fights of the weekend: Golovkin vs Rosado, Campillo vs Kovalev, and Martinez vs Burgos.

It's a nice Saturday night of fights, as along with Salido-Garcia, we also have a pair of solid HBO undercard matchups, and a significant 175-pound fight on NBC Sports. Ryan Bivins and Scott Christ give their thoughts on the weekend's other notable fights.

Gabriel Campillo vs Sergey Kovalev

Ryan Bivins

Campillo is the better and much more experienced boxer while Kovalev is the better puncher. Campillo wins a decision (or gets robbed) unless he gets old or sees the ghost of Vyacheslav Uzelkov. I seriously doubt I'll score the fight for Kovalev, but his chances of winning by KO are decent. Campillo by majority decision.

Scott Christ

Campillo is better than Kovalev, but he's better than Shumenov and Cloud and Murat, too, and he got jobbed against them. Kovalev has a lot to gain here. A win over Campillo is good for his credibility, particularly if he actually deserves it. I love this fight. I'll again say this is good matchmaking for the sake of good matchmaking. Main Events starts off the 2013 Fight Night campaign the right way with this one. Campillo by decision. Maybe. He might get screwed again for not fighting in a way that gives judges boners.

Gennady Golovkin vs Gabriel Rosado

Ryan Bivins

While I'm not making an official prediction I believe Rosado's keys to victory will be using his height, reach, and technical skills (all things he sometimes neglects in favor of brawling). Rosado says he expects to stop GGG, but he better not try to force it. Inside fighting will favor Golovkin. Rosado can make things a lot easier on himself if he keeps the Kazakh at range. It won't just be Rosado's best chance to win; it will also be his best chance to win by KO.

Scott Christ

I'm a big Rosado fan; he came up in a way you don't see much anymore, and he's trained and fought his balls off to get to this stage. Furthermore, he sees a guy, a weight class up, that everyone is raving about, and he just shrugs his shoulders and takes the opportunity, because he figures it to be an opportunity, and not a sacrifice. I think Rosado is going to come to fight; like Ryan says, brawling is probably not his best option here, because Golovkin is a tank who can put punches together beautifully, and Rosado has a habit of leaving himself open to get hit. I don't know whether that's pure machismo or what, but if Charles Whittaker can bang with him as he did at various points, Golovkin can probably stop him in that same type of fight. I actually expect Rosado to come to fight hard, and probably hurt his chances in the process. That said, I also expect this to be excellent while it lasts, and Rosado's going to have some moments that make people think about Golovkin going forward. Golovkin by TKO-5.

Rocky Martinez vs Juan Carlos Burgos

Ryan Bivins

I expect Martinez to get another dubious decision here. This fight won't be pretty, but it should be fun. Martinez by split decision.

Scott Christ

Back when Burgos "upset" Luis Cruz on the Pacquiao-Marquez III undercard, I called that one, and I said, "See?! See?!" but really, that wasn't so much about how great Burgos is, as it was about how painfully mediocre and oversold Cruz was going into that fight. Burgos is a good fighter, but not exceptional, which is about what Martinez has going for him, too. This is very evenly-matched, and it's a good sign, I think, that HBO chose to air this fight; these guys should make for an enjoyable clash of styles, and it's a meaningful fight at 130 pounds. Usually, you wouldn't really expect to see HBO graphics for this without it being on a PPV undercard, because these aren't star fighters or guys about to face star fighters. It's just a good fight. Nothing wrong with that. Burgos by split decision.
