Manny Pacquiao's November 23 win over Brandon Rios just didn't move the needle in the build-up, as the fight did Pacquiao's lowest buyrate since 2008.

Promoter Bob Arum says that the pay-per-view buys for Manny Pacquiao's November 23 win in Macao over Brandon Rios are "somewhere between 500,000 and 550,000," which the veteran promoter will spin all he wants, but the fact is that not since a rematch win over Juan Manuel Marquez, before Manny Pacquiao had become a bankable A-side major pay-per-view headliner has the Filipino superstar done so poorly on pay-per-view.

You may recall back in 2009, after Pacquiao had beaten Oscar De La Hoya and was lined up to face Ricky Hatton, Arum tried to prevent the figures being released for Pacquiao-Hatton, after boasting that it would do a lot better business than it did. You may also recall that fight garnering about 800,000-850,000 buys or so, and that was the first time Manny had headlined a truly major event as an A-side.

It's hard to pinpoint what, exactly, may be to blame here, but there are several factors that may have contributed to the low number.

Pacquiao having been on a "two-fight losing streak" is probably not to blame, since most thought he beat Tim Bradley last year, but the knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez could have certainly had some effect, even though it was a great fight.

With the time off, Manny came into this fight not only off of a bad loss, but sort of falling out of the boxing eye as well. Not a good combination.

Brandon Rios didn't have anyone convinced they would see a competitive fight. All due respect to Rios, but he was an underdog for a reason, and had lost his last fight, too, to Mike Alvarado, a guy we then saw get smashed by Ruslan Provodnikov in October. So you had Pacquiao facing an exciting but limited and not terribly well-known fighter who was coming off of a loss to a guy who just lost.

This fight came after Mayweather-Canelo in September, which did record revenue numbers with a PPV priced at an all-time high between $65 and $75 for standard and high definition, but while it excited beforehand, the main event itself was a bit of a dud that definitely did not live up to the hype.

The fight also came a month and a half after the Bradley-Marquez PPV. I doubt that one had much direct impact on this fight, but it's worth noting that this was a third straight month with a major PPV. Even a fan leaning more toward "diehard" than "casual" had to be feeling the pinch.

Speaking of the pinch, add all that up and then consider that it's the holiday season as well. In a bad economy. IN THIS ECONOMY?!?!?!

If you pool all that together, which is probably fair enough, you come down to one key thing: the fight wasn't big enough to live up to Pacquiao's normal business standards. It just wasn't. It was a big fight, and there's nothing wrong with 500,000 buys. To be clear, that's a number UFC would love to do for most of their pay-per-view shows (also, I'm not slamming UFC here, just comparing to something that is generally considered a "hotter" sport that does bigger business).

Arum says that lower site fees in Macao make the low buys here a bit more palatable business-wise, which I'm sure is true. But is Manny Pacquiao done as a million-buy man? Certainly there are fights out there where he can do that number again, but the automatic days are probably over unless he goes on another epic tear like before, and at 35, that's not likely to happen. He may have years left as a top fighter and, in terms of the overall landscape of the sport, still clearly an elite-level drawing card, but there is no longer any doubt whatsoever that the biggest pay-per-view star in boxing is Floyd Mayweather. Whatever rivalry between the two fighters there is that we'll never see end, that one is over.

Floyd Mayweather Sr says that while Manny Pacquiao did a good job this past Saturday, he did that job against an opponent who couldn't do anything, and he still needs to prove more to fight Floyd Mayweather.

Floyd Mayweather Sr was impressed enough to give Manny Pacquiao some props for his win over Brandon Rios, but he also feels that Pacquiao was able to look so good because Rios simply can't fight, and that a win over the Oxnard brawler doesn't qualify Manny for a fight with Floyd Mayweather.

"Brandon Rios can't fight and that's my honest opinion, based on what I just saw from him. I don't see no skills, I don't see no knowledge of boxing. I think Manny looked very, very good against him. Manny moved how he wanted to. He touched him when he wanted to. Manny was doing everything, moving side to side, giving him angles and cracking him. The dude to me didn't win a round. It was a total shutout. ... The way [Rios] was running his mouth, I thought he was a bad motherfucker. I wanted to see what the fuck he could do. I thought this motherfucker would really put something down man. This motherfucker started off running with his hands tucked above his head. Come on man, that was a comedy act."

The elder Floyd says that Manny will need to beat Robert Guerrero or Canelo Alvarez to get the big fight:

"If he whoops one of them, then it's time to get it on. That's what he better do. If he wants to have any chance [of getting Floyd], he better whoop one of them."

Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO) and Mayweather (45-0, 26 KO) have been dancing around a fight since 2009, and it's no closer now than it's ever been. If anything, given the division between Top Rank and Golden Boy/Al Haymon getting even larger, and the legitimate rivalry between HBO and Showtime, it's further away than it ever was before.

As always, HBO will air a replay of their pay-per-view main event, as the Pacquiao vs Rios fight will be seen this coming Saturday before Boxing After Dark.

Manny Pacquiao got some of his shine back last night with a dominant 12-round decision win over Brandon Rios in Macao, and for those who missed it or want to see it again or want to know if it will air before or after the live fights it's paired with, we can let you know that the replay is coming to HBO on Saturday, November 30.

As for the question up there, Pacquiao-Rios will air before the two live fights from Montreal. The show starts at 10:15 pm EST, meaning the live fights will be on at about 11:00 pm EST. The Boxing After Dark doubleheader is a light heavyweight attraction, as WBC titlist Adonis Stevenson defends against Tony Bellew, and WBO titleholder Sergey Kovalev faces Ismayl Sillakh.

Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO) is now back in the mix for all the big fights (not that he was really ever out of the mix, but it was a must-win fight, and he performed well). As for Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO), he surely lost no fans and he gave it a shot. He'll be back, too.

Freddie Roach was happy with Manny Pacquiao's performance last night against Brandon Rios, and says that his choice for the next fight is a fifth bout with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Marcos Villegas

"Was this the type of performance you wanted to see from Manny Pacquiao after the last fight with Juan Manuel Marquez?"

Freddie Roach

"Yeah, 100 percent. We fought really well, we had a great game plan. We fought a real tough guy, a young kid, an up-and-comer. We went out of our generation. We wanted to fight the rematch with Marquez, that was my first choice, but we couldn't get him to come to the table. This was the next-best thing. Brandon Rios, he showed a lot of heart. He took a lot of shots. He's a real tough kid, I take my hat off to him. Manny fought a really good fight, a really smart fight. It might be one of the smartest fights I've seen him fight. He stuck to the game plan completely the whole time. Under and out, moving to the right. We completely took his right hand away from him. He landed a couple left hooks but that's not his strong side. We attacked his weak side more and more. We moved to the right. It was a great fight for Manny. I think he's gonna wake a lot of people up. I would've liked to have seen him finish the fight in the last round, but his compassion got in the way again. I think he pulled up a little bit. Not to say Brandon wouldn't have lasted, because he did last for the first 11 anyway. It looked like he was fading a little bit. But overall, a 9.9. If he would have knocked him out, I would give him a 10."

Marcos Villegas

"Looking at the fight, did it answer any questions you had about Manny?"

Freddie Roach

"It answered a lot of questions. Coming off a knockout loss like that, you never know what's gonna happen and who's gonna show up. And the gym doesn't really tell you that. In the gym we have 14 ounce gloves and headgear and so forth. I was worried a little bit, it was in the back of my mind all night long. If one shot landed, maybe it could happen again. But Manny showed me in the performance that he had showed me that he's past that and it's not gonna bother him like it does some people."

Marcos Villegas

"You mentioned that you feel that Manny let him off the hook. What were you telling him in the corner, and what was he telling you, if you were urging him to finish Brandon."

Freddie Roach

"About the 10th round, I said, OK, I think we can finish him. Before my instruction was to keep boxing, he's still a little bit dangerous, just keep boxing and be smart. But then 11th, 12th, I wanted him to pick it up a little bit. I was telling him it's time. In the 11th he did pick it up a little bit for me, I was happy. Then in the 12th when I saw them touch gloves three times, I said, no. One guy accepted defeat and one guy didn't want to hurt the person. I think both guys kinda said, enough's enough."

Marcos Villegas

"Manny worked to the body a lot and didn't feint and come forward like he does in a lot of fights. Was that a part of you correcting that habit so he wouldn't get caught with shots, or was that on his part not wanting to be hyper-aggressive after what happened?"

Freddie Roach

"It was definitely part of the game plan. The thing is, when Manny feints once and jumps the second time, and people start timing that -- people watch tape and they get used to it and they're reading it a little bit better. I think Marquez read that. Sometimes Manny will go on one, two, three. So Marquez counted two, and knew he was coming on the third one, and that's when he caught Manny. So we knew we had to change that. We didn't use the feints quite as much. We used more angles, and the body was the key. We know Brandon Rios is, like, he likes to eat too much. His diet is not good. He lost his first title on the scale. He goes to 140, then he goes to 147, and he's still having trouble making weight. Then he gained 16 pounds between weigh-in and fight, that's a lot of weight. Our game plan was to go to the body. The body attack I think is what slowed him down. I was really happy with the body attack. Manny is a fierce puncher to the body. I didn't think Rios would be able to take those shots. He got hurt a couple times by body shots, but again, he is a very tough person."

Marcos Villegas

"If you had to choose, Marquez, Bradley, Provodnikov, who would you choose for Manny to fight?"

Freddie Roach

"Marquez. That's my number one choice. He finally won and he won't give us a rematch because he's living like he's the greatest thing in the world. I want that one more time. We were fighting a good fight. We were caught. Marquez is a great fighter and him and Manny will get up for each other. You know it's gonna be another great fight. Mayweather's number one, of course, but Marquez isn't too far behind."

Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KO) got his hand raised again last night with a win over Brandon Rios.

Manny Pacquiao

"I think I proved it tonight to all of you. I'm praying to God to give me more excitement and big fights to all of boxing."

(on the typhoon) "It's very difficult for me. I feel so bad for what happened in the middle of my training. I wanted to visit there, but I couldn't because of my training. I'm just praying for them. ... I think it's time -- I promised them after the fight I would visit them."

"My job is to fight, so I'm not, you know, anybody who will fight with me, I'll fight. It depends on my promoter Bob Arum. I'm willing to fight Floyd, but it's up to him."

"It was the last round and I didn't want to get careless, so I backed off a little bit and gave him a chance to finish. I'm not doing that because I'm tired or anything. I'm doing that because boxing is not about killing each other. Boxing is about entertaining people. I think one to twelve rounds, people are satisfied with my performance. So why would I try to be careless, like what happened in the last fight with Marquez? That's my thinking."

"I said I'd be like the young Manny Pacquiao, go side-by-side, going to use my boxing skills. I think I proved it."

"My journey will continue. I said we will rise again, and that's what happened."

"(Rios) is a very tough boxer. He can catch a lot of punches. (laughs)"

"I just followed the instruction given by my coach."

"Before the Marquez fight, the last fight, people were criticizing me, that Manny Pacquiao's not like before. I told them, I can be a busy boxer, but it depends on my opponent. Like Marquez, you can't be an aggressive boxer, because he's a counter-puncher. The fight was good, but it just happened that in the sixth round, he caught me. It's part of boxing."

"All glory to God. I'm just a fighter, doing my job in the ring."

Brandon Rios (31-2-1, 23 KO) says that Manny Pacquiao never hurt him last night, but the Filipino superstar was just too fast and awkward.

Brandon Rios

"It was a great fight. I trained my hardest. I put my heart and soul into this fight. I bust my butt off in the gym. It's just -- Manny Pacquiao is just, he was quick. He was quicker than I expected. I did train for quickness, but the best Pacquiao showed up tonight, and it was great. No disrespect to Manny Pacquiao. His came has done it very well. I prepared myself very well.

"It just sucks because I really wanted to win. I really wanted to win so bad. I trained my butt off for this. I can say one thing, though: I never got hurt in the fight. He never hurt me at all. I never got stung. I think the quickness just threw me off guard. I had a sparring partner that was very fast, but I think he was faster than my sparring partner. He never hurt me one bit. It just threw me off guard, the quickness and the awkwardness.

"Big thanks to Manny Pacquiao for giving me an opportunity like this. I'd like to thank the Chinese for having me here for a big fight. My first mega-fight, and I'm glad it was here in front of you people.

"I feel great. I'm not hurt. I'm not stung or nothing like that. I feel good. I could probably still go another five rounds if I had to. But to the Pacquiao camp, everybody, good job. Congratulations. We'll be back. We'll bounce back and come back harder."

"I was never stunned, never hurt in the fight. What got me was just the speed and the awkwardness. I haven't fought a southpaw in a long, long time. Years. I think that's what got me, the awkwardness. He's very quick."

"If I did (hurt him), maybe that's why he was hugging on to me. There was times when he would hug me when we'd get close. That's not the Manny that everybody's used to seeing. At the end of the day, it is what it is, the fight went the way it did. I tip my hat to Pacquiao. He still has it."

"Every time we got close, he didn't want to exchange with me, so he'd grab me. He's a smaller guy. ... I wasn't trying for the knockout because I'd probably get knocked out myself. I was just trying to fight, trying to fight whenever I can."

"I was trying, I tried, man. I tried my heart out. ... I'll say it over and over: the speed is what got me. The speed was the factor in this fight. He's very fast. He's faster than I thought he was. Motherfucker's fast."

"I'm not going back down to 140. 147 is my weight class."

"The straight left. He got me a couple times with that. That was his best punch. I never got rattled by him. ... His best punch was his quickness."

Robert Garcia

"I think taking the whole year off that he did helped him a lot. He recovered well. I'm sure he trained like never before also. He had a lot to prove and a lot to show. And he did. I'm sure everybody had that question. 'What Pacquiao are we gonna see?' I think we saw the best Pacquiao."

Mike Tyson may have finally snapped for good.

Proving once and for all beyond a shadow of a doubt that things Mike Tyson says can't be trusted, the former heavyweight champ took to Twitter this afternoon to give a quick thought on Manny Pacquiao's win in Macao over Brandon Rios. This is a real thing he said:

So, I mean, that's something.

Tyson, 47 (yes, he's younger than Bernard Hopkins), has been featured on HBO programming lately, as he sat in for a round during the Andre Ward-Edwin Rodriguez fight on November 16, and his film Undisputed Truth was a recent HBO Sports project (as well as a joint from Spike Lee!).

There are four possibilities here:

Mike believes he's an HBO company man, and is spreading the gospel of HBO boxing.

Mike is getting his mind wrapped around being a promoter, which means grossly overstating everything to the point of it being ridiculous, even when it's actually good or great or truly sensational.

Mike didn't see the fight.

Mike has finally lost his mind completely, but not in a bad way.
